Parallel Structure nedir?
Parallel structure, cümlede aynı görevde kullanılan kelimelerin, öbeklerin veya cümleciklerin aynı grammar yapısıyla verilmesidir. Türkçede buna “paralel yapı” veya “yapı bakımından denklik” diyebiliriz.
Bir cümlede üç şey listeliyorsan, bu üç şey aynı türden olmalıdır. Üç eylem veriyorsan üçü de aynı formda olmalıdır. Üç sıfat veriyorsan üçü de sıfat olmalıdır. Bir karşılaştırma yapıyorsan aynı türden şeyleri karşılaştırmalısın.
Kısa mantık: Aynı görevdeki parçalar aynı grammar formunda olmalıdır: reading, writing, and speaking veya to read, to write, and to speak.
1. Parallel structure neden önemlidir?
Parallel structure, cümleyi daha dengeli, doğal ve anlaşılır yapar. Özellikle writing içinde cümlelerin daha profesyonel görünmesini sağlar.

Paralel yapı yoksa cümle anlaşılır olabilir ama doğal ve güçlü durmaz. Grammar testlerinde de bu tür hatalar sık sorulur.
2. Listelerde parallel structure
Parallel structure en çok listelerde görülür. Bir cümlede birden fazla öğe sıralanıyorsa, öğelerin aynı formda olması gerekir.

4. Verb listelerinde paralellik
Bir cümlede birden fazla fiil aynı subject’e bağlıysa, fiiller aynı formda olmalıdır.

Gerund yani V-ing yapıları listelenirken tüm öğeler V-ing formunda olmalıdır.

6. Infinitive listelerinde paralellik
Infinitive yapılarında da paralellik gerekir. İki kullanım da mümkündür:
- to learn, to practice, and to improve
- to learn, practice, and improve
İkinci kullanımda to ilk fiil için kullanılır ve sonraki fiillerle paylaşılır. Ancak form yine paraleldir.

Bir ismi veya subject’i açıklayan birden fazla adjective kullanıldığında, listedeki öğelerin hepsi adjective olmalıdır.

- The teacher was patient, friendly, and helpful.
Paralel olmayan örnek:
Yanlış: The lesson is clear, useful, and helps beginners.
Burada clear ve useful adjective, ama helps beginners verb phrase’tir. Şöyle düzeltilebilir:
- The lesson is clear, useful, and helpful for beginners.
- The lesson is clear and useful, and it helps beginners.
8. Clause listelerinde paralellik
Bazen listelenen öğeler kelime değil, clause olabilir. Bu durumda clause yapılarının da dengeli olması gerekir.

Karşılaştırmalarda aynı türden şeyleri karşılaştırmak gerekir. Bir eylemi başka bir eylemle, bir ismi başka bir isimle, bir clause’u başka bir clause ile karşılaştırmak daha doğrudur.

11. Than ile paralellik
Than karşılaştırmalarında iki tarafın aynı yapı türünde olması gerekir.
- Reading is more useful than memorizing.
- To practice daily is better than to study once a month.
- Her pronunciation is better than her writing.
- This test is more difficult than the previous test.
Yanlış karşılaştırma örneği:
Yanlış: My English is better than my brother.
Bu cümle teknik olarak “Benim İngilizcem kardeşimden daha iyi” gibi olur. Daha doğru karşılaştırma için aynı türü tamamlamak gerekir:
Doğru: My English is better than my brother’s English.
Günlük dilde kısaltma yapılabilir:

12. As…as ile paralellik
As…as yapısında da iki taraf aynı türden olmalıdır.

Rather than ve instead of yapılarında da paralellik önemlidir.

Correlative pairs, iki parçalı bağlaç yapılarıdır. Bu yapılarda iki tarafın grammar yapısı paralel olmalıdır.
En yaygın correlative pairs:
- both…and
- either…or
- neither…nor
- not only…but also
- whether…or
Bu yapılar iki kelimeyi, iki öbeği veya iki clause’u bağlayabilir.
15. Both…and ile paralellik
Both…and, iki şeyi birlikte vurgular. İki taraf aynı yapıda olmalıdır.

Burada ilk tarafta read a story verb phrase, ikinci tarafta sadece a test noun phrase var. Doğru yapı:

17. Neither…nor ile paralellik
Neither…nor, iki şeyin de geçerli olmadığını anlatır. Türkçede “ne… ne de…” anlamına gelir.

Whether…or, iki olasılığı anlatır. İki taraf yapı olarak dengeli olmalıdır.

Either…or ve neither…nor yapılarında subject-verb agreement önemli olabilir. Özellikle iki subject farklı sayıdaysa fiil genellikle fiile en yakın subject’e göre seçilir.

23. Parallel structure nasıl kontrol edilir?
Bir cümlede paralel yapı olup olmadığını kontrol etmek için şu adımları kullanabilirsin:
