Phrasal Verbs: Look Up, Give Up, Put Off, Take After Kullanımı

Phrasal Verb nedir?

Phrasal verbs, bir fiilin bir veya daha fazla küçük kelimeyle birleşerek yeni bir anlam oluşturduğu yapılardır. Bu küçük kelimeler genellikle up, off, on, out, in, after, for, away, back gibi kelimelerdir.

Örneğin look tek başına “bakmak” anlamına gelir. Ancak look up “bir bilgiyi aramak / sözlükten bakmak” anlamı verebilir.

Kısa mantık: Phrasal verb, fiil + particle birleşimidir. Anlam bazen tahmin edilebilir, bazen tamamen yeni bir anlam olur.

1. Particle nedir?

Phrasal verbs içinde fiilden sonra gelen küçük kelimeye çoğu zaman particle denir. Bu kelime bazen preposition gibi görünür ama phrasal verb içinde fiilin anlamını değiştirir.

Bu küçük kelimeler çok önemli olabilir. Çünkü fiilin anlamını tamamen değiştirebilirler.

2. Phrasal verbs neden önemlidir?

Phrasal verbs, günlük İngilizcede çok sık kullanılır. Özellikle konuşma, listening, hikâyeler, diyaloglar ve doğal writing içinde karşımıza çıkar.

3. Literal ve idiomatic phrasal verbs

Bazı phrasal verbs anlam olarak kolay tahmin edilir. Bazıları ise deyimsel anlam taşır.

Give up kelimesini kelime kelime “vermek + yukarı” diye çevirmek doğru olmaz. Bu yapı kalıp olarak “vazgeçmek / bırakmak” anlamı verir.

4. Look up kullanımı

Look up, bir bilgiyi kitapta, sözlükte, internette veya listede aramak anlamı verir. Türkçede “bakmak / araştırmak / sözlükten bakmak” gibi düşünülebilir.

5. Look up ayrılabilir mi?

Look up, bu anlamda ayrılabilir bir phrasal verb’dür. Yani nesne isimse iki farklı yerde kullanılabilir.

Ancak nesne pronoun ise pronoun mutlaka fiil ile particle arasına gelir.

Kısa kural: Ayrılabilir phrasal verb içinde nesne pronoun ise ortada kullanılır: look it up, put it off, turn it on.

6. Look up ve Look for farkı

Look up bilgi aramak anlamı verir. Look for ise kayıp veya bulunmak istenen bir şeyi aramak anlamı verir.

7. Give up kullanımı

Give up, “vazgeçmek”, “pes etmek” veya “bir alışkanlığı bırakmak” anlamı verir.

8. Give up + gerund

Give up sonrasında bir eylem gelirse genellikle V-ing kullanılır.

Yanlış: She gave up it.

Give up bir şeyi bırakmak veya pes etmek anlamı verir. Give up on ise bir kişi, proje, fikir veya durumdan umudu kesmek anlamına gelebilir.

• Both brothers take after their dad.

Take after, özellikle aile benzerliği anlatırken kullanılır.

15. Take after ayrılabilir mi?

Take after ayrılamayan bir phrasal verb’dür. Nesne her zaman after sonrasında gelir.
